a purple cube 17.0

i wanted some art for our front porch.  i’d messed around with some scrap pieces (i think my friend dan and i had made a really quick scrap piece and painted it purple previously) and wondered about painting a piece.  at the time, i was painting geometric shapes on wood scraps and wondered about combining the two ideas.  that’s how ‘a purple cube 17.0’ came about.  a neighbor walking by once commented how it reminded her of louise nevelson.  i didn’t study art history and didn’t know who that was (or the fact that nevelson had a maine connection!).  i was stunned when i looked up her work and have been an admirer ever since.  i should have known better, but i learned via this piece that 1/4″ plywood backing was a poor choice for a piece of wooden art that lives outdoors (even though it’s not directly exposed to rain/snow).  materials included plywood backer, hardwood and softwood off-cuts, pressure treated stuff, slices from a neighbors old shutters.  and wood glue (again, not the right adhesive choice for this piece since i had to paint the background and then adhere the scraps to it.  over the years, i’ve had to replace several pieces and have gone with a more industrial adhesive).
